And they're away...

Comanche takes an early lead in Flinders Islet Race

1030: Comanche has started the Flinders Islet Race in the Audi Centre Sydney Blue Water Pointscore Series (ACSBWPS) in strong fashion, surging through a tight pack to lead the way through the heads before turning right and heading south.

Comanche started deep in the fleet before eventually making a run for the heads and taking the lead in the pack, overtaking Ichi Ban in the process.

The Flinders Islet Race, the second in the series following the Noakes Sydney Gold Coast Yacht Race, sees a strong 25-yacht fleet embark on a 92-nautical-mile maritime drag race. After the start off Point Piper, the fleet races to Sydney Heads, before heading south to the barren, rocky outcrop of Flinders Islet, 1.4 nautical miles off Wollongong, before returning to the finish in Sydney Harbour.

The ACSBWPS is the most prestigious series in the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia’s (CYCA’s) sailing calendar. The series of six races, opened by the Noakes Sydney Gold Coast Yacht Race in July, and finishing with the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race in December, is the pinnacle of the sport in this country.
