Super-maxi predicted to finish as early as Saturday morning but Gweilo, St Jude and Chancellor also performing well in Newcastle Bass

Jim Cooney & Samantha Grant’s super-maxi Comanche is at Newcastle and is the first yacht headed south towards Wollongong – cementing a superb start to the Newcastle Bass Island Race, the third Race in the Audi Centre Sydney Blue Water Pointscore Series.

Comanche is predicted to round Bass Island, just north of Port Kembla, and return north, finishing as early as 0845 Saturday.

As of midnight, Comanche enjoys a 16-nautical-mile lead over its closest competitor, Hugh Ellis’ Voodoo.

Handicap leader at present is Matt Donald and Chris Townsend’s Gweilo. Noel Cornish’s St Jude and Edward Tooher’s Chancellor are among a host of others also performing well. Follow the fleet’s progress by clicking here.

Stay locked on bwps.cyca.com.au for more on the Race throughout the evening and into Saturday.

Don’t forget as well, Blond @ CYCA will be serving hot food around the clock for the duration of the race, especially for when our hungry competitors return to port. Blond has also extended their hours during daylight saving time to be open 8am – 9pm daily, so there’s plenty of time to grab a bite to eat while watching the race!
