Super-maxi rounds Flinders Islet as battle for IRC crown heats up

With the 100-foot super-maxi well out in front, the focus now shifts to the Overall Winner title.

As expected, Jim Cooney and Samantha Grant’s super-maxi Comanche has rounded the half-way mark for the 92-nautical-mile Flinders Islet Race, well in front of the chasing fleet with the race record in their sights. The battle is now on for the overall IRC title, with Tony Kirby’s Ker 46 Patrice and Mark Griffith’s Ker 40 Showtime currently tussling for the ultimate title.

The standings are extremely tight as the remaining 38- to 52-foot thoroughbred racers begin to close on the rocky outcrop themselves. Matt Allen’s TP52 Ichi Ban looks set to reach the Islet next, closely followed by Patrice, John Newbold’s RP51 Primitive Cool and Showtime.

With less than 10 minutes currently separating the competition front-runners on IRC corrected time, the race home to Sydney Harbour will be nail-biting. The ultimate winner will not only claim bragging rights, but elevate their standing in the all-important Audi Centre Sydney Blue Water Pointscore series, the pinnacle of ocean racing in this country.

You can follow the race live with the Yacht Tracker, and keep up-to-date with the live standings.
