UPDATE | First boat around the Cabbage Tree Island

As the sun rises over the fleet, they now have Cabbage Tree Island in their sights

0630 As the sun rises on the fleet the first three boats have made the turn around Cabbage Tree Island and are on their way back to Sydney Harbour.

The battle for IRC top spot is heating up with a mix of boats at the top of the board. First place is being held by Noel Cornish's St. Jude followed by; Koa, Ichi Ban, Comanche, Smuggler and Triton. With a southerly change in the weather expected to come through at around 1200 hours today its all still to play for and will depend largely how the teams can set themselves up and deal with the wind shift. As the majority of the fleet are still heading north towards the island, when the change occurs may make a large impact to how teams are placed in the standing.

At the front of the pack Comanche has extended her lead to 15.4nm over the near sister-ships Wild Oats XI and Black who in a tight battle for second.

At this stage of the race there has been one yacht which have had to retire due to damage but with all crew safe and heading back to port.
