UPDATE | Record set to tumble

The seven-year fastest time is not looking safe

1540hrs: Stephen Ainsworth's RP63 Loki charged home in the 2011 Bird Island Race in a time of 6 hours, 38 minutes, 56 seconds, earning a new Race record and at the same time claiming the coveted double - Line Honours and IRC Division victories. Now, seven years on, Comanche is doing some charging of her own - currently due home just some 20 minutes in front of the 2011 Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race Overall Winner Loki's time. Not to be outdone, Black Jack, which hasn't been able to stay head-to-head with Comanche in the building nor 'easter is also looking like coming in under record time - however with only five minutes wiggle room currently, they'll be pulling out all stops to ensure they break the time.

Updates:

  • Two competitors are in line to break the race record but as both have hydraulically-canting keels, they will set a new 'open' race record with Loki's time becoming the 'conventionally-ballasted' race record
  • Eight competitors are around Bird Island, the northernmost point of the race
  • All forty starters are still racing, with no withdrawals at this stage
