RACE UPDATE | 0900hrs Saturday 9 November

It has been a fast paced night with strong winds propelling the fleet up to Cabbage Tree Island.

After an exciting downwind start in Sydney Harbour the crews were able to keep speeds high as they made their way north along the Sydney coastline with the strong south westerly wind holding the whole way. With such great wind the frontrunner in the fleet, Peter Harburg's Black Jack was the first yacht to round the island shortly after 2400hrs with TP52 Gweilo putting in an amazing effort to keep on their heels and be only 7nm behind at the island.

Once around, crews have been working back upwind with the breeze slowly softening as the morning continues. The large majority of the fleet are located between Port Stephens and Newcastle with most opting to stay on the seaward side of the rhumbline.

Throughout the divisions there are some serious battle raging, across IRC, ORCi and PHS some of the smaller and classic yachts are fighting hard and showing their form against the newer faster designs. The likes of recently restored Katwinchar, 34 foot Komatsu Azzurro and Sydney Hobart veteran Love & War are all sitting at the top of the leader board in their respective divisions.
