RACE UPDATE | 1600hrs Saturday 30 November

The strong southerly conditions are providing the fleet with a sprint to Bird Island as most of them now face the upwind conditions back to Sydney Harbour.

In the dash for line honours, 100-foot super maxi Black Jack have maintained their narrow lead over fellow super maxi InfoTrack. The two yachts are separated by less than one nautical mile as they pass Sydney's northern beaches on their approach to the finish.

Bill Barry-Cotter's refurbished Katwinchar is the current IRC front-runner. They have just rounded Bird Island, and hold their Division 2 lead over Snowdome Occasional Coarse Language Too in second place. The pair have alternated the top spot over the past hour and currently hold the same positions on PHS.

Julian Farren-Price's Cookson 50 About Time is leading Division 1 on IRC, with Matt Allen's Ichi Ban sitting in second.

Highly Sprung are leading on ORCi, and have sailed close to the rhumbline while they're heading closer to the shore at The Entrance compared to her surrounding competitors.

There have been two retirements during the Bird Island Race, as LCE Showtime retired first with potential hull damage, while Zen had an injured crew member on board so retired early this afternoon.

The wind conditions have subsided throughout the afternoon, making for a tactical race to the finish in Rushcutters Bay.
