RACE UPDATE | 1800hrs Saturday 9 November

The fleet is slowing as they near Sydney Heads with breeze dropping to single digits.

After an exciting first twenty hours, the breeze has taken a step back and slowed the pace to a cruise as many prepare for their second evening at sea. It will however give the crews a chance to recover and prepare before a 20 knot westerly will once again send them on their way in the late hours of the evening, peaking just before sunrise and then softening across Sunday.

With lighter winds for the next few hours, the smaller and historical yachts which were earlier today sitting at the top of the divisional leaderboards will need to be working hard to maintain their positions. As each hour passes they will be contemplating the best plan of attack for the rest of their race to compete with the larger and faster yachts which have already made their way across the finish line.

Seven crews have now finished with majority of the remaining fleet predicted to be making the final dash in to Sydney Harbour between sunset and midnight this evening.

Commenting on the race, Commodore Paul Billingham said “This has been one of the tougher Cabbage Tree races and it is the chance to sail in races like this that helps ensure that our Blue Water fleet is ready as it can be to deal with pretty much whatever arises in the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race.”

“Our Race Committee and Sailing Office team did a fantastic job in getting the fleet away on Friday - we’re fortunate to have them and the meticulous planning and execution of each race in the Audi Centre Sydney Blue Water Pointscore Series is clear to see.

“There are a number of tired but elated crews at the CYCA this evening as we wait for the rest of the fleet to come in."
